The Department of Multicultural Education is an academic department that prepares teachers for careers in ESL, bilingual, and multicultural settings. Multicultural education recognizes and supports different perceptions of the world as equally valid. It enables teachers to clarify their values and perceive their attitudes and stereotypes about other groups of people. Finally, it develops respect for linguistic and cultural differences.
Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) refers to teaching English to students whose first language is not English. Bilingual education involves teaching academic content in two languages, in the native and second languages.
In accordance with New Â鶹´«Ã½ Department of Education guidelines, the Praxis CORE remains a licensure requirement for candidates who complete Â鶹´«Ã½ teacher education programs. The recent legislation involving the Praxis CORE does not apply to Â鶹´«Ã½ teacher education programs. Â鶹´«Ã½ offers traditional and alternate route programs that all require passing scores on the Praxis CORE.
